Hootie & The Blowfish, Green Day, and Red Hot Chili Peppers rock big time! R.E.M was good too, but they could have done better. Oh yeah, Alanis Morissette did a wonderful performance of "You Oughta To Know" (although I am not into this form of music). Dennis Miller was rather boring, and the fiith call Courtney i-need-to-get-a-bath Love was a disgrace (as always). Janet Jackson looks absolutely gorgeous and classy (*GROWL*). Madonna looked breathtakingly beautiful this year also. From her head to her toe, her 70's look was SEXY! By the way, did you all see when Courtney Love (who is either drunk or high on drugs) interrupted Madonna's interview during the after-show? It was so funny watching Courtney make a total ass of herself plus to see how amaze she was to be in the presence of Madonna. Madonna was very gracefully and classy throughtout all this. Gotta love it! -------------------------------------- From: wmcbrine@clark.net (William McBrine) Newsgroups: alt.fan.madonna Subject: Madonna on MTV awards! Madonna's first appearance on the VMA's was to present the "Best Rap" award (to Dr. Dre, as it turned out). She presented solo. She wore a long-sleeved blue silk (?) shirt, open to reveal her black bra, and black silk pants. Her hair was pulled up and back, and augmented. (BTW Michael Stipe also wore a blue silk shirt (short-sleeved).) She looked lovely. She said Bob Dole couldn't be there because he was tied up in the Senate basement, so she took his place. :-) She said Rap will not bow to threats of government censorship. She seemed a bit nervous and stiff at first. Then someone in the audience yelled something, she replied "Yes, baby", got a big cheer, and continued. She seemed a bit more relaxed then, and said you could either tune in to rap, or "get the fuck out of the way" (bleeped of course). When Dr. Dre and his video director came up, they pretty much ignored Madonna, who stood behind them uncomfortably doing nothing until all three left the stage. Then Madonna won Best Female for "Take a Bow", presented by George Clooney. She came from backstage (as before) instead of the audience. When GC seemed to duck an attempted peck on the cheek and stood well back, she said "I guess this is as close as I'll get to George Clooney." She said she'd really wanted to perform, so she did a brief dance, and said, "There, I feel better." She thanked the director, the cinematographer, the bullfighter, and "all of you out there". Then as she left GC patted her on the back after all. After the show, Madonna talked with Kurt Loder. He wrongly suggested that this was the first "real" VMA she'd won, her previous wins being only technical awards. She remembered she'd also received a Vanguard award, but not her others. (Viewer's Choice, 1989 -- omitted in tonight's list of "previous winners, sponsored by Pepsi" (only three were shown), although it won by an impressive 53% in a field of five; Best Female (the same as she won tonight), in, what, 1987? -- maybe someone else can fill in the details; and probably others I can't think of right now.) Hopefully this will be corrected tomorrow on the Week in Rock. In the middle of their conversation, Courtney Love interrupted. Although she apparently was throwing things up to the balcony (where M & KL were), she managed to act polite (by her standards, at least) once she sat down. Commenting after these clips (not shown live), KL made like it was a tense, scary situation, but despite CL's past hostility, this wasn't evident to me. I did think it was rude of CL to steal Madonna's time. KL said more of M and CL would be shown on the Week in Rock. None of Madonna's posse were in evidence tonight. -- William McBrine | http://www.clark.net/pub/wmcbrine/html/ wmcbrine@clark.net | Smash the corporate state! ---------------------------------- From: GUEST Newsgroups: alt.fan.madonna Subject: Re: Madonna on MTV awards! wmcbrine@clark.net (William McBrine) wrote: > None of Madonna's posse were in evidence tonight. First of all Madonna will never be equated with the likes of Mariah and Whitney (as some people seem to be suggesting). And just because "Bedtime Stories" is somewhat "slow-tempo" as will be the new album, doesn't mean she will ever abandon her club affinities. I mean, look at the remixes for "Secret", "Bedtime Story", and "Human Nature". They're great club songs that were formerly pretty laid-back. And HELLO! The song "I Want You" is a collaboration with none other than MASSIVE ATTACK! This totally fits in with Bedtime Stories while keeping on the cutting edge of music today. Just look at bands such as Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Earthling, and Future Sound of London. Not only does Madonna represent the eighties and early nineties but is truckin' right along with the brand new styles of music. The word to describe the style of the aforementioned bands hasn't even been invented yet! And already Madonna is collaborating with one of them. It's just plain brilliant business-wise not to mention just musically awesome. Check out the other bands and you'll see (esp. Tricky). Thank-you. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Sep 1995 09:56:10 +0500 From: interloper@snider.net Subject: Kathy Lee Disses Madonna Message-ID: <199509091033.FAA08965@h16.snider.net> I was watching Live with Regis and Kathy Lee this morning. Five years ago, she siphoned from the homosexual fringes of Harlem an outrageous dance tradition called "voguing" and spiked straight, white, mainstream dance clubs with it. Or maybe it was Tom Hanks, accepting an Academy Award for his portrayal of a gay lawyer in Philadelphia,....... Heterosexual women have long been inveigled to buy lipstick worn by gorgeous models in advertising, but now Versace targets them with overtly homoerotic ads. Chalk it up to "lesbian chic," a trend that was spawned as MADONNA and Sandra Bernhard flirted in 1991's Truth or Dare, grew as playfully ambiguous style arbiter Ingrid Casares began showing up in paparazzi photos everywhere, and crested with Cindy Crawford shaving k.d. lang's face on the August 1993 issue of Vanity Fair. ........ -------------------------------- Then I used the "Search the Entertainment Weekly database" (includes a bunch of magazines) in the page and searched for "Madonna". 60 documents found. I picked up a Vibe article about Janet Jackson, and it started by talking about Madonna. It's back in Oct. 94 so this may be old news to you but in case you never read it, here it is: (Sorry this is long!) http://www.pathfinder.com/vibe/archive/oct94/docs/Janet3.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- A story that won't go away is the one in which Janet Jackson arrives unannounced at a Madonna-frequented New York hot spot with brand-new remixes in hand. She walks up to the booth and tells the DJ he can be the first in the country to play them-if he doesn't play another Madonna song for the entire night. Rumor (clubland legend, actually) has it that Madonna was there and, needless to say, was highly pissed-even more so when the DJ went ahead with Janet's wishes. While one version of critical wisdom says janet. is the Erotica Madonna failed to make, another has Janet Jackson, as Rolling Stone put it, "rifling through Madonna's cast-off closet." And in Truth or Dare, there's a scene where Madonna's in the Chanel store and emerges from a fitting room in an all-black outfit. As she walks back into the fitting room, one of her dancers says under his breath, "Very Janet Jackson/Rhythm Nation," and Madonna sticks her head out of the dressing room and says, "Bite your tongue." It's easy to theorize that Madonna, a middle-class kid from Detroit who keeps creating, then recycling, herself, resents Janet's pedigree in the entertainment world. And it's as easy to imagine Janet resenting Madonna biting so much black style as she went through her self-creation. And as in most everything-especially popular music-race is a factor. Janet will never be thought of as being as accomplished as Madonna. It's like the NBA: Janet Jackson, like Magic Johnson, is perceived as capitalizing on what "comes naturally." Madonna, like Larry Bird, gets crazy props because she's more of a thinker, plays a "mental game," is studied and meticulous-all traits with way more perceived value than the one(s) Janet has. I ask Janet if it's true that she can't stand Madonna. " 'Can't stand?' " Janet asks me back, smiling, lips pursed, eyes rolling up toward the ceiling. "How does my mom say it? If I don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all." Then she says, "Hate is a strong word." I never said "hate." "But if I did hate her, I'd have valid reasons." ...... ----------------------- ------------ mad for Mad. Annie Lennox is great too, but not that good, though I love the dancing tutu guys and Desree just wasn't good enough (her video was too bland...enough with the arm movements). I'll probably get a lot of replies for this comment, but here goes: I thought Alanis' performance was so-so. She sounded like an amateur(which she is) who needs to practice singing live a lot more often if she wants to make a lasting impression. Just imagine if she was giving a concert how she would sound after singing one song, like "You Oughta Know". She wouldn't have a voice left to sing her other songs. The survey is almost complete. Just two days left and the results will be out. I was really surprised by how many people responded and I want to say Thanx to everyone who did respond. Definatley one of the best performances. I thought it was great that Madonna defended her hip-hop roots with her anti-censorship speech. Particularly since Time/Warners are the most notorious label for not backing up the artists who have made them millions. While I do feel the Gangsta vibe had it's time and place it is time for something new and the history of rap should not be downplayed because of a down- period. I was psyched that Madonna won for BEST FEMALE VIDEO. She seemed very nervous and that goofy dance was obviously to calm her nerves. I thought she looked incredible (totally made up for last year) and was really sweet. It was refreshing to see her acknowledge the public, yet she still is not very eloquent when it comes to award shows. Of course the real excitement came at the end of the night when Courtney hijacked the Madonna/Kurt interview. There was so much going on!!! My suggestion, watch it 3 times and focus on each player. I thought Courtney was practically grovelling at Madonna's feet. They have both said in the press that they had phone conversations yet Courtney described this as "we've met" as Madonna contradicted her with "we've talked." Madonna did seem nervous as to what this wild card would do, considering that COurtney was more fucked up than America's Sweetheart Whitney Houston. But once Madonna saw how incoherent Courtney was she regained her cool. I also thought it was interesting that Courtney said it was her disagreements with Guy O'Seary that stopped her form signing with Maverick. Kurt and Tabitha were certainly dramatic as to watch happened with Mo and Courtney calling it a"a train wreck, everything went terribly wrong, Madonna will probably take a contract out on Courtney's Life and watch the Week In Rock TRUST US". Well I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Also did anyone notice during the commercials that MTV will air the Marvin GAye Tribute special?. I wonder if this will be a simulcast with ABC who was originally set to air the special that M and Massive Attack will perform on. Hopefully it just won't be the video for I WANT YOU but something exclusive. Have yet to see alot of media coverage of the awards but CNN ignored Madonna's appearance and win, Kathy Lee dissed Madonna as foul mouthed and her look as a tired Joey Heatherton wanna-bee. This ironically came after her pronouncement that she's never done anything to a living soul. Well of course besides being self-righteous and a showbiz fake, but that's another story......... Bob Dole for his condemnation of rap music. Madonna's verbal assault, complete with the f-word, was the highlight of Thursday night's show. Host Dennis Miller was bleeped twice in his monologue; Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea cavorted in black bikini briefs; Michael Jackson sang, danced and grabbed his crotch during the opening number. In between, awards were handed out. Pop-rap trio TLC won four, including video of the year, for its cautionary AIDS tune ``Waterfalls''; alternative rockers Weezer matched that total with ``Buddy Holly,'' their video homage to television's ``Happy Days.'' Madonna, in a green silk shirt unbuttoned below her bra, minced no words in presenting the best rap video award to Dr. Dre. ``Bob Dole is sorry he couldn't be here tonight to give out the award for best rap video. ... Rap has proven itself a force to be reckoned with. Either listen up, or get the f--- out of the way,'' she said to cheers from the sold-out Radio City Music Hall crowd. Three months ago, the Kansas Republican and presidential candidate criticized the violent and sexist lyrics of several rappers. Madonna and Miller weren't alone in using four-letter words. Green Day, performing from Sweden via satellite, was bleeped, as was Courtney Love when she sang with her band Hole. Love raged through the song ``Violet'' after dedicating it to her late husband, Kurt Cobain, and to drug overdose victim River Phoenix. The show also featured Bon Jovi playing live in Times Square before a huge crowd and R.E.M. playing before winning the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award for lifetime achievement. Other bizarre non-award tableaus abounded through the three-hour live show. Basketball bad boy Dennis Rodman proclaimed himself ``the baddest, craziest son of a b---- in this building,'' and no one disagreed. Green Day lead singer Billie Joe advised the audience to spit on the cameramen. Heavyweight contender Mike Tyson made a surprise appearance to introduce the Chili Peppers. Apparently, the M in MTV stands for Michael. Jackson went through three costume changes and an assortment of crotch-clutching maneuvers in opening the show with a 15-minute medley of his hits. He and sister Janet later won three awards for their black and white sci-fi video, ``Scream'' from Michael's ``HIStory'' record. The pair had the most nominations of any artist, 11. ``My wonderful brother Mike ... in that opening, he kicked a--,'' said Janet, who wore a white midriff T-shirt with the word ``Pervert'' on its back. Tom Petty captured the first award -- best male video -- for his ``You Don't Know How It Feels'' clip. In his acceptance speech, he noted that MTV had scrambled his lyric, ``Let's roll another joint.'' Madonna won best female video for her bullfighting epic, ``Take a Bow.'' TLC was also honored for the Viewer's Choice award, best group video and best R&B video. After the first award, band member Lisa ``Left Eye'' Lopes dropped the ``n-word'' while thanking her friends and fans. Weezer was cited for breakthrough video, best alternative video, best editing and best director. Hootie & The Blowfish won as best new artist. White Zombie won for best hard rock show and closed the show with ``More Human Than Human.'' Host Miller disagreed with that sentiment. ``I was just backstage participating in a prayer circle with the guys from White Zombie,'' he said. ``To be honest with you, I'm not sure which side we were praying to.'' WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Bob Dole delivered a sharp reply to pop singer Madonna's criticism of his attacks on some rap music and the morality of Hollywood. Appearing Thursday night on the MTV Awards ceremony, Madonna singled out the Senate majority leader in her defense of rap. ``Bob Dole is sorry he couldn't be here tonight to give out the award for best rap video,'' she said before presenting the award to Dr. Dre for ``Keep Their Heads Ringin'.'' ``Rap has proven itself a force to be reckoned with. Either listen up, or get the f--- out of the way,'' Madonna added. In a speech Friday to the annual convention of the Christian Coalition, Dole said he has a right to ``express outrage'' at some forms of pop culture and suggested many artists have thin skins. ``They don't want to be shamed. They don't want to be singled out. They don't want to be named,'' said the 1996 GOP presidential front-runner. ``It's not OK to advocate the attacking of women or police officers, as do the lyrics of some rap songs. I may not be an authority on pop culture ... . I do know the difference between freedom and license, between the artistic and the obscene,'' Dole added. Earlier this year, Dole made a highly publicized speech urging the entertainment industry to stop the ``debasing of America'' through violence and graphic sex in music and movies. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Sep 1995 13:03:07 -0600 (MDT) From: "Joe E. However, has it occurred to anyone that the winners knew in advance that they were going to win? From the first hour that I watched, it certainly seemed like the winners were all sitting in the same seat over and over, the cameras found them immediately... AND, they were ALL there in attendance. Perhaps the awards aren't awards at all where one is surprised but a recognition that requires attendance in order to be recognized. Someone was surprised that Madonna left the recording sessions for Evita to be there, what if she hadn't attended, she probably would not have won. -- Brian Daher The Ohio State University daher.1@osu.edu http://www-bprc.mps.ohio-state.edu/cgi-bin/hpp/bdaher.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Sep 1995 22:22:43 -0400 From: bc405@yfn.ysu.edu (Joey Packo) Subject: YAY!!!! She is no competition for a magnificent dancer like Miss Janet who just captivates you with every move even when she is being extremely mellow (as she was in "That's the Way Love Goes"). Janet became such a great dancer not by going to school as Madonna did for so long, but with the help of people she surrounds her self with. These people include her brother MJ, friends (who are the dancers in the her videos) and she learn a thing or two from the fabulous Paula Abdul. I find it rather funny that people think Madonna can dance much better than Janet (Janet will put her to shane on the dance floor people). What will these people come up with next? Madonna is a better boxer than Mike Tyson ? Just chillin and give respect to Miss Janet because when it comes to dancing home girl has the lethal groove to enchant you. :) Brian SuperCat P.S. Madonna can groove, of course, but Janet is too bad for her to handle on the dance floor. ------------------------------ End of Madonna Digest V4 #191 ******************************
